Interreg III is a Community initiative which aims to stimulate interregional cooperation in the EU between 2000-06. It is financed under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

This new phase of the Interreg initiative is designed to strengthen economic and social cohesion throughout the EU, by fostering the balanced development of the continent through cross-border, transnational and interregional cooperation.

Special emphasis has been placed on integrating remote regions and those which share external borders with the candidate countries.

WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN (MEDOCC) is part of the Community Initiative Programme INTERREG III B, approved by the Commission's Decision of 23 of December 2003 C (2003) 5326 amending Decision C (2001) 4069 of 27 December 2001, with regard to the inclusion of Greece as a partner country in the programme.

The indicative financing plan puts the eligible costs if the priorities selected for the joint action by the Community and the Member States at 214.340.135 € for the whole period and the financial contribution from the ERDF at 118.823.863 €.

The priorities are as follows:

  • Mediterranean Basin
  • Territorial development strategy an urban system
  • Transport systems and Information Society
  • Environment, development of the heritage and sustainable development
  • Technical Assistance

The ARCHIMED Programme of the Community Initiative INTERREG III B Package International Cooperation for the new programming period 2000-2006, specializes the interventions for improvement of the spatial planning integration of the South-eastern Mediterranean area.

The ARCHIMED Programme constitutes a continuation of the pilot Programme of the countries of Greece (entire country) and Italy (Basilicata, Calabria, Puglia and Sicilia), which was implemented in the period 1997-1999 (in the context of applying the models of innovative actions of article 10 of the ERDF) and covers an extended area of the Mediterranean Basin, where the eligible areas can be divided into two geographical subtotals as follows:

  • CENTRAL MEDITERRANEAN
    • GREECE: Entire Country
    • ITALY: The five (5) regions of South Italy (Sicilia, Calabria, Basilicata, Puglia, Campania)
  • SOUTH - EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN
    • CYPRUS
    • MALTA
    • TURKEY
    • LEBANON
    • SYRIA - GAZA
    • ISRAEL
    • JORDAN
    • EGYPT
    • LIBYA

The overall budget of the Programme is €  79,377,880 out of witch € 52,559,548 are ERDF funds.
